User Group Meeting Location Picked

Wes Brown and I just had a very nice meeting with the folks at Experis about them sponsoring the CACTUSS User Group by offering a place to meet for the newly formed Central meeting, which I have the privilege to lead. I really like their style. Very nice people and very eager to help the SQL Server community. You can read more about them here: http://www.Experis.com

About the Meeting Facility

The facility is located at their Austin location at 301 Congress Ave, in Suite 375 right in downtown Austin (3rd and Congress). This facility has non-validated garage parking, but street parking is free after 5:30pm. For this reason, we are starting the meeting at 6pm to give folks a chance to find free street parking. The room they offered is quite large, much bigger than I expected. It’ll hold about 100 people! So we will have plenty of room for community training events, namely the newly added second meeting night for the Capital Area Central Texas Users of SQL Server (CACTUSS) user group. Finally! A location to serve the downtown folks and those who live south of downtown and who don’t like sitting in traffic. This new meeting will be referred to as the CACTUSS Central meeting, to differentiate it from the now CACTUSS North meeting which is still located in the Microsoft building on the usual night at the usual time. The CACTUSS Central meeting will be held on the 3rd Monday of every month, which usually ends up landing one day before the monthly CACTUSS North meeting (but sometimes not, so check your calendar). This will allow some of our out-of-town speakers to visit both UGs in one trip easily. In fact, our aim is to allow visiting speakers the ability to take a little tour of Texas right up the middle of the state: 3rd Monday: CACTUSS Central (Austin). 3rd Tuesday: CACTUSS North (Austin). 3rd Wednesday: SALSSA (San Antonio – 1.5h drive south of Austin). 3rd Thursday: NTUUG (Dallas – 3.5h drive or 45 min flight north of Austin).

Meeting Schedule:

6:oo PM Start meeting, free pizza/soda, discuss tech issues & observations and talk with Experis. 6:30 PM Main training session. See the CACTUSS website for the upcoming presentation topic and speaker. 7:30 PM Rap up, Q&A and give aways. 8:00 PM End.

Meeting Location:

Experis Austin Offices 301 Congress Avenue, Suite 375 Austin, TX 78701 For directions see: http://cactuss.sqlpass.org/MeetingArchive.aspx

Our first meeting will be Monday August 15th!

Speaker For The Maiden Voyage Meeting

Wes Brown will talk about Solid State Disks and SQL Server. What makes SSD’s a good fit? Should you add SSD’s to your SQL Server storage make up? When does it make sense to stick with hard disks? How do SSD’s work? He’ll answer these questions and any others that you bring! Wes spoke at the first ever SQLRally, is speaking at the upcoming PASSSummit in October, and regularly speaks at user group meetings, as well as SQLSaturdays.
